It all began with one act of kindness…

Maria Bertrand’s story with Happy the Sparrow began on a quiet morning run during the height of the pandemic, a time when the world felt heavy, and she herself was going through the most difficult time in her life - with the worst yet to come. On what she calls her “mental health run,” Maria discovered a tiny, injured sparrow fighting for his life on the side of the road. That moment of compassion changed both of their lives forever.

As she nursed Happy back to health, his resilience—and his imperfect little beak—became a living reminder that healing is possible, even in brokenness. As her dog Moone’s health declined, Happy was her beacon of hope for a brighter future. What began as an act of kindness between a woman and a bird has since blossomed into a global movement about connection, hope, and the extraordinary power of choosing love - one small act at a time.
